Insecticides have each their own chemical composition, but all synthetic insecticides use the same fundamental ingredients, while plant-based insecticides have a different class of ingredients.

2 Types of Mosquito Insecticides: Synthetic and Natural

There are 2 general types of mosquito insecticides available on the US market, each with its unique chemical composition and characteristics. Synthetic compounds belong to one of 4 families. Natural (plant-based) compounds have their own class of ingredients.

We will compare these chemicals with our own A-Niks proprietary concentrate.

Synthetic insecticides: 4 Families of Ingredients

1. Pyrethroids:

Pyrethroids are synthetic compounds derived from pyrethrins, natural insecticides found in chrysanthemum flowers. Among the pyrethroids used in mosquito control: permethrin, cypermethrin, and deltamethrin.
Advantages: Pyrethroids are highly effective against mosquitoes and other insects, have a low mammalian toxicity, and break down quickly in the environment.
Disadvantages: Some mosquito populations have developed resistance to pyrethroids, reducing their effectiveness. Additionally, they can be toxic to aquatic life and beneficial insects, such as bees.

2. Organophosphates:

Organophosphates are a group of synthetic compounds that includes malathion, naled, and chlorpyrifos. These chemicals work by inhibiting the enzyme acetylcholinesterase, leading to the overstimulation of an insect’s nervous system.
Advantages: Organophosphates are highly effective against a wide range of insects, including mosquitoes. They kill them fast.
Disadvantages: These compounds are more toxic to humans and pets than pyrethroids. They can also be harmful to non-target organisms, and have a higher environmental persistence.

3. Carbamates:

Carbamates, like organophosphates, inhibit the enzyme acetylcholinesterase in insects. Examples: bendiocarb, propoxur.
Advantages: Carbamates are effective against various insects, including mosquitoes, and are less persistent in the environment compared to organophosphates.
Disadvantages: They pose a higher risk to humans, pets, and non-target organisms than pyrethroids, and some insects have developed resistance to carbamates.

4. Insect Growth Regulators (IGRs):

IGRs interfere with the growth and development of insects, preventing them from reaching maturity. Examples of IGRs used in mosquito control: methoprene, pyriproxyfen.
Advantages: IGRs are highly target-specific and pose a low risk to humans, pets, and non-target organisms. They can be an effective part of an integrated mosquito management program.
Disadvantages: IGRs do not always kill adult mosquitoes instantly and are less effective in controlling adult mosquito populations.

Natural Insecticides: 6 Common Plants

Natural mosquito control insecticides, such as pyrethrins (derived from chrysanthemum flowers) and essential oils (e.g., eucalyptus, citronella, and lemon), can be effective in certain situations. They are generally less toxic to humans, pets, and non-target organisms than their synthetic counterparts.

A-Niks’ MosquitoGo system uses a concentrate made from essential oils. This natural formula is environmentally friendly and won’t adversely impact butterfly gardens, waterways, koi ponds, kids or pets.

Our proprietary formula is comprised of six active ingredients: garlic, rosemary, citronella, cedar, geraniol, and lemongrass oils. While each of these works well on its own, the combination creates effective, lab-proven results.

The solution adheres to your grass and plants, turning your entire outdoor space into an incredible pest-fighting machine. A-Niks’ MosquitoGo system effectively kills and repels mosquitoes, fleas, ticks, and other biting pests. It creates a protection zone that covers your entire property.

MosquitoGo has been shown to kill at least 98% of mosquitoes and repel new ones for one to two weeks after application.

When Can Natural Insecticides Replace Synthetic Compounds?

1. Efficacy:

Natural insecticides must be proven as effective as synthetic insecticides in controlling mosquito populations. This includes providing rapid “knockdown” (kill) of adult mosquitoes and effectively targeting larvae.

2. Persistence:

Natural compounds should demonstrate a suitable level of persistence in the environment to maintain effective mosquito control over time, without needing frequent reapplication.

3. Resistance Management:

Natural insecticides should be effective against mosquito populations resistant to commonly used synthetic compounds, providing an alternative for managing resistance.

4. Cost-Effectiveness:

Natural insecticides should be cost-effective compared to synthetic alternatives, making them a viable option for large-scale mosquito control programs.

5. Environmental Impact:

The environmental impact of natural insecticides should be minimal, with low toxicity to non-target organisms

6. Scalability:

Natural insecticides should be available in sufficient quantities to meet the demands of large-scale mosquito control programs. This includes the ability to produce and distribute these natural products on a large scale without significant challenges.

7. Regulatory Approval:

Natural insecticides must undergo rigorous testing and obtain regulatory approval from relevant authorities, ensuring their safety and efficacy for mosquito control. This process may require extensive research, field trials, and compliance with various environmental and health regulations.

8. Compatibility:

Natural insecticides should be compatible with existing mosquito control equipment and methodologies, allowing for seamless integration into current mosquito control programs without requiring extensive modifications or additional investments.

9. Stability:

The stability of natural insecticides should be adequate under various environmental conditions, such as temperature and humidity fluctuations, ensuring their effectiveness and longevity during storage and application.

10. Public Acceptance:

Public perception and acceptance of natural insecticides are crucial for their widespread adoption. Education and awareness campaigns may be necessary to inform the public about the benefits and safety of using natural insecticides for mosquito control.

11. Integrated Pest Management (IPM):

Natural insecticides should be part of a comprehensive Integrated Pest Management strategy that combines various mosquito control techniques such as source reduction, larval control, and biological control methods. This approach will ensure that natural insecticides are used effectively and sustainably alongside other control methods.

12. Adaptability:

Natural insecticides should be adaptable to various mosquito species, including those that may be introduced or emerge in the future. This adaptability ensures that natural insecticides remain a viable option as mosquito populations and their control requirements evolve.
